Born in Bayonne, Charles-Martial Lavigerie was professor of ecclesiastical history at the sorbonne and director of the School of Middle Eastern Studies in Syria. He was named bishop of Nancy (1863), then archbishop of Algiers (1867). Wanting to evangelize the population of North and sub-Saha-ran Africa, he founded the Society of the White Fathers (Société des pères blancs) in 1868, then that of the Missionary Sisters of Africa (Sœurs missionnaires d'Afrique) in 1869. Head of the church in Africa, cardinal (1882), he also became apostolic administrator of Tunisia (1884) after a French protectorate was established in that country. Cardinal Lavigerie continued his missionary work as well as his struggle against slavery (Brussels Anti-Slavery Conference of 1889). In 1890, at the request of Pope Leo XIII, he gave the famous "toast of Algiers," encouraging loyalty to the government, to show the church's support for the third republic.
